Occidental returns All-SCIAC, All-NCAA Tournament, and All-Academic picks Karie Nickle ’11, Julie Monday ’11, and Tessa Bailey-Findley ’12, as well as All-SCIAC pick Nanea Fujiyama ’13 for this year’s season. After a disastrously slow start in 2010, the Tigers turned it around and went all the way to the DIII national championship match against Cal Lutheran.

“It’s a terrific honor to open the season with such a high ranking,” said Head Coach Larry Zubrin. “However; with seven of the top 10 teams in the nation coming out of our conference, we clearly have some significant challenges in front of us this season. We’re looking forward to the opportunity to live up this ranking with our hard work and determination.”

Occidental rises from No. 3 in the final 2010 poll to take over at No. 1 as the Tigers garnered 98 points to edge out Pomona-Pitzer (No. 2, 94 points) and Redlands (No. 3, 88 points).

Cal Lutheran, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Whittier, and Chapman (the only non-SCIAC school) complete an all-California first seven in the poll. Carthage of Illinois and Grove City of Pennsylvania mark the first non-Golden State programs to crack the Top 10.

La Verne completes the Top 10, with Macalester, Wheaton and Washington & Jefferson receiving insufficient votes to crack the poll.
