The Utah Valley University International Center will host the sixth annual Ramadan Iftar Program on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 7:40 p.m.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims that are physically able to do so, fast each day of the month from sunrise to sunset. The month-long holiday is spent reflecting and rededicating oneself to deity. This year, Ramadan is observed Aug. 12 through Sept. 10.
“It is the holiest month of the year for Muslims,” said Masood Amin, a UVU associate professor of engineering. “It is the month during which the Holy book Quran was completed, and many other important religious events took place.”
Each evening during Ramadan, following the sunset prayer, or Maghrib, Muslims break their fast with a meal called Iftar, which usually begins with the ritual eating of a date. In many communities, these meals are enjoyed with family and friends, and often with whole communities. The faithful can then eat throughout the night hours until the sunrise prayer the next morning.
The University’s program is designed to increase understanding of the culture and religious traditions of Muslim faculty and students at the institution, said Danny Damron, director of the UVU International Center. Ruhul Kuddus, a UVU associate professor of biology, and Mohammed El-Saidi, the associate vice president for academic administration at UVU, will be honored at this year’s program for their service to the Muslim community.
“At our Ramadan dinner this year on UVU campus, rice and chicken will be served. There is nothing significant about the type of food (served) as long as it is Halal, a certain type of food that Muslims are allowed to eat,” Amin said.
The Ramadan Iftar Program will be on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 7:40 p.m. at Centre State in UVU’s Sorensen Student Center, and is open to the public. Tickets are $5, and can be purchased through Aug. 20 at Campus Connection at (801) 863-8337.
