The Freshman Perspective: Spring of Freshman Year!

David Lymburner on April 12, 2011 in College Entry

It has really been a really long time since I wrote my last blog, but I have been so consumed with school and sports that I havent had much spare time. School has been going very well and I finished the first of two terms in the 4 x 4 block schedule with a great GPA. I joined the high school track team and enjoy practicing every day for at least two hours – I love it! We have had a lot of invitational meets as well as regular league meets against local high schools and I have made it to all of the invitational meets except for one in almost all four of my events. I plan to compete on the track team all four years of high school and I am very excited to keep improving the times and distances in my events. Playing a sport is extremely time consuming, but I have been able to maintain an A in all of my classes. It seems like playing sports or doing an extracurricular activity of that sort helps a lot with my academics. I have better grades this term (despite having harder classes) than I did last term because consistently doing track has forced me to learn excellent time-management habits. I also sleep better and I enjoy my classes more than I used to. Earning excellent grades, contributing to the high school track team, and developing time management skills are helping me build my qualifications for applying to college in fall 2013 just 2 years away! Its not easy keeping an A average. With it comes a lot of work, but if it means I can get into a good college, it is definitely worth all the effort. This term, my most difficult classes are Spanish 2 and Biology. Biology is usually a sophomore required class, but I like science and want to excel in that field as much as I can. This way I will be better prepared for the science classes I would like to take in college. I want to understand science so I can take the more challenging classes in college and eventually get into an interesting job dealing with science. It was only about six weeks into this spring term that I had to decide which classes to take my sophomore year. This is the first year I am eligible for AP and Honors classes and I understand colleges like to see students take as many Honors and AP classes as possible. Also, these classes are based on 5 points, instead of 4 points, so an A would earn an extra point toward my GPA. I know that these classes will be very challenging, which is intimidating. It was a hard to decide on which math class to take my sophomore year. I could choose statistics which would put me in Calculus my senior year, or choose Pre-Calculus which would mean I would take Calculus my junior year. I ended up signing up for more difficult classes including an Honors class and I feel that by doing this I will have more options for classes in my junior and senior years. Freshman year has been really fun and exciting and I think I am ready for the next three difficult years. Its been really incredible to see how far I have come along and how much I have improved in school and sports. I am anxious to see what the next few years will bring! Meghan T. PHS Class of 2014
