Utah Valley University’s Department of Theatrical Arts is pleased to announce Susan Zeder’s “Wiley and the Hairy Man” as its opening production for the 2010-2011 main stage season.

“Wiley and the Hairy Man” is a traditional folk tale based on one of Aesop’s fables. The story centers on a young boy named Wiley whose dreams are filled with images of the Hairy Man, a mysterious creature that he fears more than anything in the world. When the Hairy Man invades Wiley’s home for real, it’s up to him defeat the Hairy Man and conquers his fears.

The production “will be very environmental, portrayed in ‘dreamscape’, and seen through Wiley’s eyes as a nightmare,” said John Graham, the production’s director. “Wiley is able to find his own strength and his own way of dealing with his fears of the world. He becomes more self reliant, and mature.”

“Wiley and the Hairy Man” premiered in 1972 at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and has toured professionally with the Everyman Players. The play was awarded the ASSITEJ/USA Outstanding Play Award, and author Susan Zeder has been recognized both nationally and internationally as one of the nation’s leading playwrights for family audiences.

Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, and will run through Saturday, Oct. 2, excluding Sundays. Public matinees are available on at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18 and 25 and Oct. 2. Elementary school matinees will be held at 10 a.m. on September 22-23 and 28-29.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.uvu.edu/theatre, by phone at (801) 863-PLAY or in person at the UVU Box Office, located on the southeastern corner of the Gunther Technology Building.

This production is a fantastic kick off to the UVU 2010-2011 season, and a delightful children’s production appropriate for the young and the young at heart.
