Former UCR Athlete, Coach Among New Members of the Riverside Sports Hall of Fame
Scarlett Garvan on April 28, 2011 in Education NewsRIVERSIDE, Calif. () — Two sports greats from UC Riverside’s past — Mavis Washington and Ray Dalke — are among the seven outstanding athletes who will be inducted into the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame Sunday, May 15.
The Ninth Annual Induction Ceremony is set for 2:30 p.m. at Landis Auditorium at Riverside Community College. The reception starts at 5 p.m. in the RCC Quad.
Washington, UCR Class of 1972, was a star at Rubidoux High School and lettered in basketball, volleyball, tennis and softball at UCR. She was an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) All-American basketball selection from 1974 to 1976, and played on the winning AAU National Championship team in 1975.
Washington coached women’s basketball in Nebraska, Syracuse, Miami (Ohio), Idaho and Fresno State and was inducted into the UCR Hall of Fame in 1986. She also dabbled in a film career, starring as “Swish” in the 1979 movie Fast Break. She presently lives in Fresno, Calif.
Dalke, the highest ranking American ever in the martial art of Shotokan Karate, worked in the physical education department at UC Riverside for 30 years, coaching the team to five national collegiate karate championships between 1967 and 1997. Dalke also coached eight individual national champions and his 1997 squad finished second in the International Collegiate Association Karate Tournament.
During his tenure as coach, Dalke hosted 20 National Karate Association tournaments and two international Karate Collegiate Association tournaments. He also owned several local and regional Shotokan Karate dojos. He is now retired and living in Grants Pass, Ore.
Tickets for the induction ceremony and reception are available at the door. Admission to the ceremony is $10 for adults, and free for children 12 and under. Tickets for the ceremony and the reception, which includes food and drink, are $50 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under.
Each inductee has a bronze plaque on the Wall of Distinction,located at the park on the corner of 14th street and Magnolia avenue in Riverside.
