Major changes planned for deadly railroad crossing
Bianca McKerihan on August 17, 2010 in Education NewsSPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP — Major changes could be on the way to the railroad tracks on McCord Rd. in Springfield Township.
The county engineer presented Lucas County Commissioners with a plan to create an underpass at that intersection. The next step is applying for grants to fund the project. The underpass would allow pedestrians to cross safely during train traffic.
Back in December of 2009, fifteen-year-old Cody Brown was killed and sixteen-year-old Bri Mullinger was injured as they crossed the tracks to get to school. Springfield schools treasurer, Ev Harris said he’s been trying to bring the area to the boards attention for several years. The underpass which includes a roundabout will cost $35 million dollars. Even if the project gets grants, it would be years before construction began. Harris thinks an overpass would be a better solution.
“That would be the quickest way to solve it and then if they want to down the road, go ahead and get the funding to put the underpass in and the roundabout if that’s what they’re going to do; but let’s solve the problem upfront,” Harris.
There have never been any crossing guards assigned to help students pass that area. Students are being reminded to take their time crossing the tracks to school.
