ALBANY Gerardo Suero, the fourth leading scorer in the nation, scored 26 points and the the University at Albany held on to beat Maine 76-75 in an America East game Saturday night at SEFCU Arena.

With the win, the Danes (4-1, 12-7 overall) move into a first-place tie with Stony Brook in the league. The Seawolves lost their first game of the season earlier in the day, at Boston University.

The Danes were leading 76-75 and the Black Bears (2-2, 8-7) were inbounding the ball at halfcourt with 17.1 seconds left. Maine never got a shot off, but the ball was in the hands of its best player, Gerald McLemore, at the end.

McLemore attempted to make a move around the Danes Mike Black, but the two players got tangled up. McLemore fell to the floor as the buzzer sounded. There was no call from the referee, and the game ended.

I kind of thought it went both ways, Black said.  First, (McLemore) kind of swung his arms and hit me in the face, and I went down. Then my foot got tangled up with him, so, I mean, it went both ways. Im glad the ref didnt call anything. We both fouled each other.

Mine coach Ted Woodward walked towards the officiating crew with his arms spread, a befuddled look on his face. He thought there should have been a call, but he was

Its not my call, Woodward said.  Its a bang-bang play. We got the ball in the hands of the guy we wanted to at the end. I was not in a great position to see it. It would have been nice to get a shot off.

The game was tied 10 times and the lead changed hands 14 times. The final lead change came when Black scored on a layup with 1:37 left, giving the Danes a 75-73 lead. After John Puk made one of two free throws with 1:09 left to make it 76-73, the Black Bears got a basket from freshman Justin Edwards to cut the deficit to 76-75.

Albanys Gerardo Suero, the games leading scorer with 26 points, then attempted to bull his way to the basket going through four defenders. He got his shot blocked by Maines Mike Allison, and that set up the final play.

Black scored 15 points and matched his career high set Wednesday night against New Hampshire with nine rebounds. Luke Devlin added 13 points and Logan Aronhalt had 12. As a team, the Danes shot just 35.5 percent (22-62) from the floor. They came into the game shooting 45 percent.

Edwards led Maine with 19 points and McLemore had 17.
