American Fork baseball gets past Timpanogos

Perhaps no game carries as much importance to the capitalization of opponent’s mistakes more than baseball.

A truth evident by the American Fork Cavemen baseball team taking advantage of three Timpanogos errors in route to a 5-2 victory over the T’Wolves on Thursday afternoon.

“You’ve got to capitalize on those mistakes because it’s rare,” American Fork head coach Jared Ingersoll said. “They’re (Timpanogos) well coached and if you are going to get a win against a ball club like that, that’s what you have to do.”

The Cavemen jumped out in front with a three-run home half of the first inning after back-to-back singles from Ryan Pitcher and Jake Miles set the table.

Zack Willis followed and found a way to drive in both Pitcher and Miles after the T’Wolves first error of the game occurred on a ball off of Willis’ bat to center field.

Willis eventually came around to score on a single from Jeremy Reynonlds that gave the Cavemen the early 3-0 lead.

“Our guys just hit the ball well that first inning and our pitchers did a really good job today.,” Ingersoll added.

Ky Clayton, who picked up the victory on the mount for the Cavemen, went five innings in the winning effort-surrendering just two runs.

“He did a really good job of mixing it up, he’s worked really hard over the off season and it’s starting to pay off for him,” Ingersoll said.

Timpanogos seemed to be sticking around after Tyler Hamilton homerun led things off in the second inning and cut the deficit to 3-1. The T’Wolves picked up one more run in the third inning, but were unable to reach home safely throughout the remainder of the contest.

American Fork added a run of its own in the third inning before a B.J. Eldridge single plated Nick Searle for an additional insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Reynolds took the bump in the top of the seventh to earn the save.

Timpanogos falls to 3-3 on the season and will face Lone Peak on March 22 before beginning region play.

American Fork improves to 6-0 on the season and will look to continue its winning streak into the Region 4 opener against Jordan on March 2

“I did envision it (the Cavemen start) with these guys,” Ingersoll said. “They’ve worked as hard as any team I’ve ever had in the offseason. We have got to carry this momentum and just keep playing the way we have.”
