Top baseball talent honored on 2011 All-Valley Team

It was another incredible year for baseball teams in Utah Valley, capped by American Fork’s run to the 5A title game and Spanish Fork’s 4A state championship. Here’s a look at the best of the best from 2011:

2011 All-Valley Team

5A Pitcher of the Year

Dane Peterson, Sr., Lone Peak

He was 8-1 this year and in his only loss of the season, he struck out 14 against rival American Fork. He had a 2.92 ERA and in 52 2/3 innings he struck out 67. He also helped his cause by hitting eight home runs and 35 RBI.

4A Pitcher of the Year

Hayden Nielsen, Jr., Spanish Fork

He topped Utah Valley in wins with an 11-1 record. He also led the Valley in strikeouts with 89. He finished the season with a 2.11 ERA. He gave himself some room for error by hitting .398 and stole 16 bases.

5A Offensive Player of the Year

Broc Starr, Sr. Infielder Pleasant Grove

He hit .440 with eight home runs for the Vikings. He also hit six doubles, but was most efficient with men on base. He drove in 39 runs.

4A Offensive Player of the Year

J.C. Snyder, Sr. Salem Hills

He was second in the Valley in batting average with a .542 batting average. He hit six home runs and drove in 37 runs. As a pitcher, he was used primarily as a closer. He was 2-0 and in 17 innings did not allow an earned run.

 

5A Coach of the Year

Jarod Ingersoll, American Fork

Ingersoll has long been known for getting the most out of his talent, but this year may have been his best work yet. He coached the Cavemen to a Region 4 title and led American Fork to the state title game before they fell to Bingham in the 5A title game. The Cavemen won the Region 4 title with a 14-4 record, finishing two games ahead of Lone Peak. They finished the year at 24-6 overall.

4A Coach of the Year

Spanish Fork, Jim Nelson

When you have a team that loses just one game all year to a Utah team, you know you’ve done something pretty remarkable. Nelson coached the Dons to a win in the Big League National Invitational tournament and a Region 8 title. Spanish Fork’s only loss in Utah was to Snow Canyon, a team they came back to sweep in the 4A title game to win their third straight state title. Spanish Fork finished the year at 29-3 overall.

ALL VALLEY TEAM

Jarrett Jarvis, Sr. Catcher Spanish Fork

The Dons catcher not only was solid behind the plate, he hit .452 and led all Utah Valley players in doubles with 16. He also hit six home runs and drove in 44 runs.

Jordy Hart, Sr. Infielder, Westlake

For the second straight season Hart finished the season over .500. This year he hit .508 with five doubles, six doubles, four triples.

Tyler Hamilton, Jr., pitcher Timpanogos

He helped Timpanogos to a Region 7 title. He was 7-3, with a 2.40 ERA. He had 54 strikeouts in 58 innings. At the plate he hit .431

Bronson Anderson, Sr., Pitcher Lehi

He was 7-1 for the Pioneers with a 4.04 ERA and had 65 k’s. He gave up just one home run in 60 innings. He also was productive at the plate. He also hit .377 with three triples and four home runs. He drove in 25 runs.

Matt Nelson, Sr., Infielder/Pitcher Spanish Fork

He was on the mound when the Dons won the state 4A title. He was 4-0 on the year with a microscopic 0.89 ERA. He hit .345 and played second base for Spanish Fork when he wasn’t pitching.

Seth Rhineer, Sr., Pitcher/infielder, Provo

He hit .506, with 13 doubles, with four home runs and 35 RBI. As Provo’s ace, he was 7-2 with a 2.92 ERA and had 80 strikeouts.

James Lengal, Sr., Infielder, Spanish Fork

A shoulder injury kept him from pitching this year, but it didn’t slow him down at the plate. Hit batted .418 eight doubles and five triples, three home runs and 33 RBI.

Brady Pierce, Sr., Pitcher, Salem Hills

Emerged as one of the state’s top pitchers. He was was 10-1 on the year with a 3.19 ERA. He tied Spanish Fork’s Hayden Nielsen for Utah Valley in most strikeouts with 89. He was also pretty effective when he got to bat. He had a .447 average.

Zach Robinson, Sr, Outfielder American Fork

He batted .421and hit 14 doubles, second among all of Utah Valley players. He drove in 19 runs and helped the Cavemen win the Region 4 title

Zach Willis, Soph. Catcher, American Fork

He had a breakout season for American Fork. He led the team in hitting with a .431 average. He also drove in 21 runs for the Cavemen.

Cade Hooley, Sr., Infielder/Pitcher

What made him so valuable to Pleasant Grove was hit versatility. He hit .410, with six home runs and 25 RBI. He led the Vikings in innings pitched and had 47 strikeouts.

Salem Hills: Jordan Jensen, Josh Whiting, Colby Porter, Taylor Snyder, Colton Hill

Timpview: Creed Richardson, Adam Wynn, Colton Brimhall, Braxton Wright
