Members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation are calling on parents, teachers and school officials for proposals on how to change the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy met Wednesday with a group at Tunxis Community College in Farmington. He says he plans to set up several more discussions over the next few weeks.
The No Child law, enacted in 2002, sets strict testing rules and requires that every student is proficient in reading and math by 2014. Critics say that’s impossible without more funding, and that even schools making noteworthy progress are getting penalized for missing the benchmarks.
President Barack Obama has urged Congress to reform the law, and Connecticut is among many states considering whether to seek waivers to avoid sanctions until the measure is overhauled.
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
As you likely know, there is a significant hurricane currently in the Atlantic Ocean, which weather forecasters project to hit the East Coast this weekend. SU leadership is currently monitoring Hurricane Irene for its potential impact in Syracuse, as well as the impact on SU community members located at Lubin House in New York City, Greenberg House in Washington, D.C., and other regions along the East Coast.
Weather forecasters indicate that the storm will bring some wind and rain to the Syracuse region on Sunday, but it will not have a strong effect on our campus or city. However, larger metro areas on the East Coast, including Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston are likely to see more substantial impacts, with strong winds and more rain. Students who reside on North or South Campus in Syracuse who need assistance with any weather-related issues over the weekend should contact SUs Department of Public Safety at 443-2224.

Summer ball schedules continue to dwindle into mid-August, but many title runs are just beginning.
In Cape Cod, the semifinals are underway as the Harwich Mariners defeated the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, 6-0, in Game One of their series Tuesday night. Nick Routt, a rising senior southpaw from Mississippi State, carved through the Y-D bats, firing seven innings, yielding six hits and striking out four to give Harwich a one-game lead.
The Mariners scored eight times in the first three innings during their two quarterfinal wins against Brewster and got on the board early again in the second round. Harwich scored five runs in the game’s initial two frames, which allowed Routt to settle into a groove. Speedsters Ronnie Richardson and Darnell Sweeney, teammates at Central Florida, and rising Georgia Tech senior Jake Davies, started the game with consecutive singles to put Harwich on top 2-0 after the first inning. Also, find out if your school offers wireless Internet access (and if your computer is compatible) or whether youll need an Ethernet cable. Note: Some schools prohibit users without spyware or virus protection from connecting to the network. So, seriously, get the deets!
