Toledo family moves for son’s athletic future
Bianca McKerihan on August 4, 2010 in Education News No Comments »TOLEDO — Nigel Cramer is a high school student. He attended Start last year and received a varsity letter for wrestling. The sophomore student hoped to finish his academics and athletics at Start High School, but the wrestling program didn’t make this year’s budget cuts. “I’m going to have to move. I just want to receive a good education and continue on with the sport I love, wrestling,” said Nigel.
The Cramers tried to transfer Nigel to another school unsuccessfully. The policy “does not allow a student to transfer schools and compete without serving a year penalty,” said Nigel’s dad, Mark Cramer.
On Thursday, the Cramers went before the Ohio High School Athletic Association to request a waiver that would lift the one year penalty. Their request was denied. “I can’t believe that a student – a child – would be penalized for the poverty of their district,” said Mark.
The family plans to move from their Toledo home so that their son will be eligible to compete on the wrestling team at Central Catholic.
