We’ll be reporting live from the Ventura College and Moorpark College football scrimmages today:
The Pirates’ offense may be built around sophomore Antavius Sims, but his two backups shone in Saturday’s first scrimmage. Freshman quarterback Shawn Robinson, Sims’ former backup at Americus (Ga.)-Sumter High, hit receiver Kordarius Rice for a 53-yard touchdown pass and freshman quarterback Sean Madlem, from Villanova Prep, connected with freshman receiver Golden Head for a 65-yard scoring strike.
Rice, a transfer from Southern Mississippi, will compete for a starting spot, said VC coach Steve Mooshagian.
Freshman running back Dezerick Reed, the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Nevada a year ago, ran seven times for 45 yards. He piled up 1,885 yards and 22 touchdowns for Las Vegas-Del Sol High.
Besides that, the first-team defense dominated, which included big plays by Wayne Blackwell and Jon Lattimore on the offensive line and Valtray Jackson in the secondary.
Ventura natives Adam Flores (Ventura County Christian) and Jordie Escalante-Rising (Buena) intercepted passes.
